Mary was born in Miller, SD on November 25, 1927 to Charles and Bertha Bennett. She attended school in Wenatchee and graduated from Wenatchee High School. She married the lover of her life, Hugh B. Newberry, on November 22, 1947.
She was a homemaker and raised four children while helping her husband with their pear orchard. Mary was an excellent cake decorator who gave special attention to detail with every cake and made hundreds of wedding and anniversary cakes. Most importantly, Mary made it a priority to create special cakes for family birthdays. Also, for many years, she volunteered her time at Cashmere Convalescent Center pampering residents in the beauty shop. This weekly activity was very important and special to her.
Mary and her family were members of Cashmere First Baptist Church for decades. Later in life, Hugh and Mary joined Bethel Baptist Church in East Wenatchee, WA. She especially loved singing in the church choir. She was also a member of the Degree of Honor Protective Association and the Cashmere American Legion Auxiliary. Hugh and Mary loved dancing and were members of the Century Club of Wenatchee.
May will be remembered for her contagious laugh. She was a very social person. She had a sharp wit and fiery spirit. She enjoyed taking trips to Reno with friends and family. Her last trip to Reno was at 90 with her family. Mary loved massive yard sales, camping, many trips to the beach, and most of all: her family.
Mary is survived by her children: Russel (Diane) Newberry of Mechanicsville, MD, Gayle (Bob) Pendergrass of Gibsonville, NC, Mindy (Tom) Peterson of Cashmere, WA, and Laury (Tom) Lorz of Everett, WA; 12 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; 3 great-great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and 7 siblings.
Her family would like to extend a special thank you to Confluence Health Hospice Services, the friendly staff at Blossom Creek Memory Care, the caring staff at Epeldalen Retirement and Assisted Living, and all of Mary’s wonderful friends.
Due to Covid-19 restrictions, a family graveside service was held June 11, 2020 at the Cashmere Cemetery.
