Michael E. Compton
April 20, 1949 - July 24, 2019
Michael E. “Mike” Compton, 70, a lifelong Squilchuck resident, passed away on Wednesday, July 24, 2019, following a sudden illness.
He was born on April 20, 1949, in Wenatchee to the late Darrell and Doris (Hickman) Compton. He was raised on the family ranch up Squilchuck and attended Wenatchee schools. Mike’s dad passed away when Mike was 16 years old and with a farm to run he was forced to grow up fast. Under his grandfather, Ivan, Mike learned much about running a farm. He learned about leadership, innovation, fortitude, and business. All valuable lessons that Mike continued to use throughout his life, on and off the farm. Mike eventually took over the family farm from his grandfather and remained deeply connected to it until the day he passed.
Mike met and was later married to Tressa Lorraine Smith on July 18, 1970, in Wenatchee. They have continued to make their home together on the ranch up Squilchuck.
As a rancher, Mike enjoyed the farming implements and loved his tractors, dozers, trucks, as well as his cows. There have been 7 generations of Comptons actively farming the Squilchuck since 1898. Mike had a great memory and could recall just about every story he ever experienced or was told about all 121 years. His passion for Agriculture led him to become a board member at Peshastin Hi-UP as well the Ag Supply Company in recent years. Mike became a Volunteer Fire Fighter for Chelan County Fire District # 1 in the 1970’s and later became a Commissioner. He remained a Commissioner for many years until retiring in 2017. Mike was an automotive enthusiast with a love for muscle cars. He worked with many special friends through the years, especially with his involvement with 4-H, FFA, and the Chelan County Fair. He also spent many years working at Mission Ridge and Steven’s Pass. His boys have many fond memories growing up with Mike on the mountain and riding in the Snowcats with Dad while he was grooming the runs. Family, farm and friends were very important to Mike. He enjoyed them all until the very end.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Tressa Compton of Squilchuck, WA; two sons and daughters-in-law: Jason & DeAnn Compton of Squilchuck, WA and Justin and Ember Compton of Sammamish, WA; brothers: Dan Compton of Badger Mountain and Jim (Jill) Compton of Chelan, WA; grandchildren: Kelly, Colton, Kadi, Madden, Chase, Nash; great-granddaughter, Mia and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ivan and Nolia (Flint) Compton, parents, and a brother, Scott Compton.
